Forlorn Beauty

Forlorn Beauty, Victoria Memorial Kolkata by Sukalyan Chakraborty
Camera: Nikon D3000

Shutter Speed: 1/50 s

Aperture: f/11

ISO: 100

It's difficult to say when I will stop posting Victoria Memorial snaps as this grand structure surprise me every time I visit  this place. This was taken just after sunset when the sky was still red and the lights weren't switched on. I love this photograph because probably this is the first time I am not showcasing the whiteness of the structure...

Concentration

Peace of Mind by Sukalyan Chakraborty
Camera: Nikon D3000

Shutter Speed: 1/160 s

Aperture: f/5.6

ISO: 100

In the scorching heat, unbearable pollution and deafening noise of central Calcutta (Kolkata) district Maidan is a breather. The vast lash greenery no motorable road yet stone throw distance from the central district make this place unique. Many young people come from the distant places to Kolkata in search of job. This is the photograph of such a job seeker who is doing his last minute preparation for his job interview. The grand old structure of Victoria memorial in the background is like a mother figure for the people like him who are far from their home...

Morning Walk

A New Day Begins, Victoria Memorial Kolkata by Sukalyan Chakraborty

Camera: Nikon D3000
Shutter Speed: 1/250 s
Aperture: f/11
ISO: 400

Victoria Memorial is one the most popular places for morning walk in Kolkata. And as this magnificent structure is so popular and so many people (including me) already talked a lot about this place I can't find any single new thing to say. So prefer to not write anything and enjoy the serenity of Victoria Memorial and my days in Kolkata...

Greetings from the God

Greetings from the God sunset afternoon at Kolkata photography by Sukalyan Chakraborty
Camera: Nokia N95
Exposure: 1/300 s
Aperture: f/2.5
ISO: 100
Yesterday was Bengali new year. While we were busy sending our wishes via SMS or social networking websites God sent us his greetings via nature. I found this dramatic sky while taking a stroll in my terrace at dusk. I did not have my camera with me and didn't want to waste my time to bring it from my room. So I decided to shoot it with my cell phone. Probably this is the first photo I am showing you all which is taken from my cell phone. So I am a little bit apprehensive....

Holiday

Howrah Bridge of Kolkata photography by Sukalyan Chakraborty
Camera: Canon PowerShot S5 IS
Exposure: 1/200 s
Aperture: f/8
ISO: 400
This is the famous Howrah bridge, which is almost synonymous to Kolkata. In my childhood this bridge meant holiday for me! Crossing this bridge meant we were going for holiday trip and that we are shortly going to take a train from Howrah station. This meant absolute freedom for the soul - no study, no strict rules of school - where one was free like a bird. This picture makes me nostalgic of that time..

Transportation

Vidyasagar Shetu Transportation at Kolkata photography by Sukalyan Chakraborty
Camera: Canon EOS 300D
Exposure: 1/1600 s
Aperture: f/3.5
Here in Kolkata we have a perfect mixture of past and present. When there is the most sophisticated bridge to cross the river Ganga, there are manually driven boats also. Boats are very important mode of transportation here in Kolkata as they are very cheap. So many goods come from the village to the city in boats. The boat owners almost spend their entire life on these boats. They sleep here, they cook here, they take their bath here also. They were very important part of our literature, but with time they lost their place, big and modern bridges overshadowed them.

Unknown End

Unkown End Dimna lake Jamshedpur - travel photography by Sukalyan Chakraborty
Camera: Canon PowerShot S5 IS
Exposure: 1/60 s
Aperture: f/8
ISO: 200
This photograph is taken few years back when I went to visit Jamshedpur (Tatanagar) for couple of days. I spotted this staircase in Dimna, a few kilometers from Jamshedpur and found it very interesting. Dimna lake is one of the most beautiful lake in eastern India. And everyone should pay a visit to adjacent Dalma forest. Anyway, it was one of the most most memorable tour of my life because of several reasons.

Idle Afternoon

Idle afternoon at Mukutmonipur, West Bengal - travel photography by Sukalyan Chakraborty
Camera: FinePix S8100fd
Exposure: 1/320 s
Aperture: f/4.5
ISO: 100
In the winter last year we were in Mukutmonipur, which is few hours journey from Kolkata. We reached there at around 1 pm and after having a quick bath (the water was chilling) and lunch we went to take a stroll along the huge dam on the river Kangsabati. Interestingly we find this view, two men, parking their bike beside the road, are asleep on the pavement. Till date I failed to find out the reason. May be because of the sun that place was bit warm. This may not be a great photography, but due to its uniqueness in content I love this a lot.

Work in Hand

village near Barsey, Sikkim - travel photography by Sukalyan Chakraborty

Camera: KODAK C663
Exposure: 1/320s
Aperture: f/2.7
ISO: 80
This photograph is taken while trekking from Varsey to Dentam in west Sikkim. Varsey is a Rhododendron sanctuary which is full of color is mid April and has a great view of Himalayan ranges in mid October to mid November. But the Trekking route from Varsey to Dentam is a very tough one. Very few trekkers take this route. One has to trek through the jungle for nearly 6 km. This was the first village we saw after starting from Varsey. We took some rest, had a cup of tea and started once again.....

Family Outing

Vacation, West Bengal by Sukalyan Chakraborty
Camera: Canon PowerShot S5 IS
Exposure: 1/100 s
Aperture: f/8
ISO: 80
This photograph is taken in Beharinath, West Bnegal some time back. Beharinath is a remote village with only one place for the tourists to stay. There is no regular public transport. So the villagers have to travel few kilometers by foot to get a bus. This is a typical remote village scene where women carry the luggage on their head while their husband take care of the baby. I guess they were going to some formal place because both of them have their footwear on.

Enlightenment

Enlightment - Buddhist Monk at Lava, West Bengal - Travel photography by Sukalyan Chakraborty
Camera: KODAK C663
Exposure: 1/250 s
Aperture: f/4.6
ISO: 80

This photograph is taken in Lava, West Bengal in India. In Lava there is a college for Buddhist monks. Their prayer can be heard from across the town of Lava. It is a nice and quiet place to spend the weekend. When talking about Lava, I should mention one place to stay. The cottages of West Bengal Forest Development Corporation. The place is nothing but a fairyland.

United We Sit, West Bengal by travel photography by Sukalyan Chakraborty

Camera: Canon PowerShot S5 IS
Exposure: 1/400 s
Aperture: f/4
ISO: 80
This is my second post of Bokkhali photograph. I loved the concept of seating very near to the sea and have a chat with family or friends. These chairs are available on rent. We took those on rent and spent nearly 3 hours. It was a memorable experience. I loved the splash of colors the chairs are offering. To emphasis on this I gave a small touch of photoshop in snap.

Location: Mukutmonipur, West Bengal, India
Camera: Fuji FinePix S8100fd
Exposure: 280 s
Aperture: f/4.5

We found this boat half drowned but well tagged. To our surprise we got to know that the owner of the boat drowned it intentionally. but why? His friend replied - it's time for harvest, so the owner has no time to ferry passenger in his boat. So he drowned it so that the wooden body remain in good condition. It was a good knowledge we acquired from our weekend trip to Mukutmonipur. Now feel glad to share that knowledge with you through my photography.

Victoria Memorial

Victoria Memorial Kolkata travel photography by Sukalyan Chakraborty

Location: Victoria Memorial, Kolkata, India
Camera: Canon PowerShot S5 IS
Exposure: 1/125 s
Aperture: f/8
ISO: 200

The most photogenic part of Kolkata is Victoria Memorial. Though it is also very popular among the love birds for the lush greenery and total peace. For the same reason it's very popular among the photographers. As a landscape photography lover I couldn't resist myself from taking this picture in a winter evening. This picture is taken from outside the boundary wall of the north-eastern side of this grand architecture.

Sunrise from Peling, Sikkim - travel photography by Sukalyan Chakraborty

Location: Peling, Sikkim, India
Camera: KODAK C663
Exposure: 1/80 s
Aperture: f/8
ISO: 100

This is one of my favorite photograph of sunrise I ever took. On that day we were planning to return from Peling as early as possible as when we went to bed last day it was very cloudy. At last we decided to have a look from our hotel window before getting ready to leave. And we found no cloud at all. Immediately our plan was changed and rushed out of the hotel with all our photography gear. It was really satisfying to click such a landscape photography featuring Kanchanjungha..

Bishnupur is one of the most prestigious place with rich history in Bengal. It is also nominated for UN world heritage site. I was awe struck with the terracotta art work in different temples there. Last December I, along with my three photographer friends, went to Bishnupur to capture few marvels. We ended up capturing a whole lot. This is one of those photographs clicked in the Madan Mahan Temple.

Suburb terrace landscape photography by Sukalyan Chakraborty

Location: Khardah, West Bengal, India
Camera: FinePix S8100fd
Exposure: 1/200 s
F-number: f/8
ISO: 100

Here is the place I spend most of my time. This is the terrace of my house. When I am happy; I come here, when I am sad; I come here, when I am bored; I come here.

I took six photographs overlapping each other from the top of our water tank which is situated in a corner of our terrace. Then merged all these six photos into one to make this panoramic view of my locality.
