This photograph of lord Ganesha is taken in the afternoon when the 200 Watt bulb was the only source of light. Every time I visit Kumortuli I got amazed by the fact that how can they (the Artists) create such beautiful idols in such a poorly lit, hot and humid place, where even there is little space to walk freely. This snap is my tribute to all those great artists who never got the appreciation they should get.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />

But the news paper is carrying the same news of death and hunger. In this dark world of crime and hatred the Demon (Asura) looms large. But we still love to believe that the goddess is there and she is watching all these devils and will punish them in due time. Perhaps that's the reason everyday something happens what brings smile in our faces...</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">This photograph is taken in Kumortuli, Kolkata. It was a very poor lighted studio. At the time we visited this studio there was no artist working, otherwise there would be some artificial light source. But this poor light helped me to take this meaningful snap. Because of the lack of light we can only view the face of the demon and the Durga placed befind.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />

As described earlier this is the biggest festival in West Bengal, India - the preparation begins many months earlier. We have to wait exactly one month for this festival of life. The main preparation is going on in Kumortuli where the idols of the Goddess are made. Beside this in every locality pandals are coming up and everybody is busy with their shopping for the puja days. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">This snap portrays an artist in Kumortuli giving his artistic touch to the idol of Goddess Durga to make it as lively as possible. The Artists have to work in a make shift studio where no sun light enters. So his only source of light is a 100 Watt bulb. And as there is no ventilation they are forced to work in unbearable heat. But to my surprise they are producing magic year after year...</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />

So I decided to track them in various stages of the creation of this unique art form. This photograph of Ma Durga with Asura is my favorite from my first visit where the blue transparent roof gave the snap a dreamy look.</div><br />

Today when I went through my old photographs I found it very interesting and instantly decided to upload it in social networking sites. Then I thought it would be nice if I share it through my blog. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />

Somebody left this bottle of water where we were shooting and I found the reflection of the sun in the bottle was really fascinating. Instantly I decided to click. But the place wasn't that nice, so I had to crop the left part of the snap. There is a boat in the left part what became uninteresting with the crop. I feel sad about it. Wish there wasn't any need to crop it. So I didn't post this photograph for a long time. But recently I posted it in Orkut where many of my friends liked it. So I am taking the risk to put it in my blog also...</div><div style="text-align: left;"><b><br />

We buy new dresses for our near and dear ones, distribute sweets and of course, have lots of, lots of food. This post is for those who do not live in Bengal...<br />

In my childhood this bridge meant holiday for me! Crossing this bridge meant we were going for holiday trip and that we are shortly going to take a train from Howrah station. This meant absolute freedom for the soul - no study, no strict rules of school - where one was free like a bird. This picture makes me nostalgic of that time..<br />

When there is the most sophisticated bridge to cross the river Ganga, there are manually driven boats also. Boats are very important mode of transportation here in Kolkata as they are very cheap. So many goods come from the village to the city in boats. The boat owners almost spend their entire life on these boats. They sleep here, they cook here, they take their bath here also. They were very important part of our literature, but with time they lost their place, big and modern bridges overshadowed them.</div>Sukalyan Chakrabortyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04112118794753114375noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8490868445423122853.post-49525874741615677032010-03-26T17:28:00.003+05:302010-10-01T13:22:26.867+05:30Little Drop of Water<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjV0h2AObzdRi4Ecq6PKav71lUPN3bjpVpzg5WT8a5ms0196WMt3_cH5yAfG4-z_eX_BrHcBBxCGj9UByU57n-pYFyqGWKoCuDUec4GBOIs7HKBOvVXNmoHzDN_TVNaeE-oqDRzmZD6RcE/s1600/Rain+drop+moment+photography+by+Sukalyan+Chakraborty.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjV0h2AObzdRi4Ecq6PKav71lUPN3bjpVpzg5WT8a5ms0196WMt3_cH5yAfG4-z_eX_BrHcBBxCGj9UByU57n-pYFyqGWKoCuDUec4GBOIs7HKBOvVXNmoHzDN_TVNaeE-oqDRzmZD6RcE/s600/Rain+drop+moment+photography+by+Sukalyan+Chakraborty.jpg" width="600" alt="Rain drop moment photography by Sukalyan Chakraborty" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">Camera: Canon PowerShot S5 IS</div><div style="text-align: center;">Exposure: 1250 s</div><div style="text-align: center;">Aperture: f/3.5</div><div style="text-align: center;">ISO: 400</div><div style="text-align: left;">This photograph was taken in my balcony in a rainy afternoon. I love the impression of the fish tail on the wall created by the showpiece.</div>Sukalyan Chakrabortyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04112118794753114375noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8490868445423122853.post-40126388818715988802010-03-23T12:19:00.005+05:302010-10-01T13:25:42.687+05:30Idle Afternoon<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnq3JJ4vh23yPgsVBr3tsSzo2NQmdHHSSm6D16Yv-CTQQsqnf_j368R-BY1iso-2EEHJkMkAy4uEm6fb5cwNdtHOeH2IxPOBiX5miUr5WFaHTjuriRkwgMYSFr2Xz1wSrJhRPmmSLrx4I/s1600/Idle+afternoon+at+Mukutmoni+pur,+West+Bengal+-+travel+photography+by+Sukalyan+Chakraborty.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnq3JJ4vh23yPgsVBr3tsSzo2NQmdHHSSm6D16Yv-CTQQsqnf_j368R-BY1iso-2EEHJkMkAy4uEm6fb5cwNdtHOeH2IxPOBiX5miUr5WFaHTjuriRkwgMYSFr2Xz1wSrJhRPmmSLrx4I/s600/Idle+afternoon+at+Mukutmoni+pur,+West+Bengal+-+travel+photography+by+Sukalyan+Chakraborty.jpg" width="600" alt="Idle afternoon at Mukutmonipur, West Bengal - travel photography by Sukalyan Chakraborty" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">Camera: FinePix S8100fd</div><div style="text-align: center;">Exposure: 1/320 s</div><div style="text-align: center;">Aperture: f/4.5</div><div style="text-align: center;">ISO: 100</div><div style="text-align: left;">In the winter last year we were in Mukutmonipur, which is few hours journey from Kolkata. We reached there at around 1 pm and after having a quick bath (the water was chilling) and lunch we went to take a stroll along the huge dam on the river Kangsabati. Interestingly we find this view, two men, parking their bike beside the road, are asleep on the pavement. Till date I failed to find out the reason. May be because of the sun that place was bit warm. This may not be a great photography, but due to its uniqueness in content I love this a lot.<br />

But to emphasize on the fact that she is the creator of this magnificent piece of art work. Anyway this time the Title is not my original one. These are my favorite dolls made of jute. In Bengal people are struggling to revive the jute culture. Now jute is not confined to making of bags and sacks. Nearly every thing we use in daily life is available in jute now. But the plastic market has engulfed us so badly that we are unable to accept the old, beautiful and environment friendly alternative.<br />

But the Trekking route from Varsey to Dentam is a very tough one. Very few trekkers take this route. One has to trek through the jungle for nearly 6 km. This was the first village we saw after starting from Varsey. We took some rest, had a cup of tea and started once again.....</div><br />

It is a nice and quiet place to spend the weekend. When talking about Lava, I should mention one place to stay. The cottages of West Bengal Forest Development Corporation. The place is nothing but a fairyland.</div><br />

Hundreds of artists from across Bengal come to the fair with their family. They stay at the fair ground, create their piece of art and sell them at the same venue. This is one of the most colorful events of Kolkata. You can have a first hand experience of how the art is created. Due to it's diversity and color it has generated a lot of enthusiasm among the photographers of Kolkata. I took this photograph of the child, son of a terracotta artist, who was rather surprised to see the big lens of my friends camera :D </div>Sukalyan Chakrabortyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04112118794753114375noreply@blogger.com0
